Simply put, Mark Brey is a central part of my heart. He was a dear member of my immediate family, present at the birth of both my daughters, Godfather to Molly. His humor, heart. kindness and passion were just the things I wanted my children to grow up with and what a kind heart he offered us all. I have traveled so many miles with him for so many years. I am so very proud of all that he was and did.  At the time of his death he was making his living completely as an actor at the top of his game. We are at a loss this week, unsure of how to proceed without him yet certain that we are all so much richer for having lived in the privilege of his love. As I prepared tonight to fly to his memorial in New York, my seven year old, Gaby handed me a note "to read at the memorial" she said. This is what she wrote;

"Sept 20 Uncle Mark died.
All of my family is very sad that Uncle Mark died
But now he is in Heaven and he is watching all of us.
But even if he is in Heaven I know he will be alive in my heart"

Goodnight my sweet Mark, put in a good word for us in Heaven, will you? If anyone deserves super top angel status it's you.

Cinderella
The title of the play is Cinderella.
But the undisputed star of the show is Mrs. Baden-Rotten, the evil stepmother, played by a tall (and deep-voiced) man in drag--more specifically, actor Mark Brey, who glories in the part ...Brey is delicious, including his wild invitations (such as a cell-phone symbolism with fingers stretched from mouth to ear: inviting his front-row victims to “Call me!!!”). He prims, he primps, he sports outrageous outfits (by costume designer B. Modern of Santa Cruz) that range from tacky tiger stripes (with falsies) to huge overhead hair. Audiences love the guy. He is a marvel...Sacramento Bee

I love Mark Brey. I don't know if I believe in angels, but I think Mark may be one. Whenever I'd see him around town or in the theater, it always made me happy for the rest of the day. I feel so sad that he's gone, like something wonderful has been taken from me. But I feel lucky too, because meeting Mark, working with him and being friends with him, was a joy and a blessing in my life. God bless you, Mark.

Hey, it's Wynn Wilson. I was in Cinderella with Mark in Sacramento. I got his number in New York before the show and I tracked him down...

I saw Mark between the dildos and the leather (Pleasure Chest NYC). I knew I had seen him before, but where? He thought the same of me. We stared and stared. Then we chit-chatted and talked about the project. But I kept staring at those big blue eyes. I had a vision. A skinny curly haired dancer. Leaping very high... and in a jolt it came to me. Brigadoon. I met him before in Brigadoon. Can't say that about too many people, now can you?.

"Thank you for that"

I'm the theater critic at the Sacramento Bee. I've just heard the sad and tragic news about Mark Brey and want to offer my condolences.

I had the pleasure of working, directing and teaching Mark during his early years at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. He was the lead actor in Bye Bye Birdie and Grease both world college premieres. Kathy Najimy and Mark made an incredible contribution to those plays that it created a standard of excellence in musical theater at our college. Mark remind me of a young Dick Van Dyke. What a great soul and great talent. I am very lucky to have known a such a wonderful spirit. Con much Amor...William Virchis

Mark was incredible as Mrs.Baden-Rotten. I never got tired of watching him come up with a new "face" or gesture that would be even more outrageous than the last performance!  He was also incredible as a person. I didn't know Mark long or well, but I'll always remember him as one of the most gentle, kind and thoughtful people I've ever met.  .
