"food for thought"
|
Dr. Polly Wise dedicated much of her life to teaching preservice teachers, as well as those in the field, not only to teach children to read, but to instill a love of reading in the children they teach. She was the inspiration behind this project and helped with it as it was conceived and developed. She and her beloved husband of 67 years, surgeon Dr. Harry Wise, were working together on a book for the project during the weeks before they perished in a fire at their home in Norfolk,Virginia, on Oct. 25, 2005. They will be remembered by many, many people all over the world for the wonderful humanitarian work they did, separately and together, throughout their lives. |

UPDATES
Kind Offer of Help: We received this kind offer this week. If there are any teachers or others near Shreveport, you may want to call Andrea Martin at Foster's Printing.
Note on Book Construction...Lightweight books with cardboard or heavy stock covers will be easier to distribute than bound books...perhaps having them laminated (with rounded corners) at a local printer would be helpful. Have them bound with plastic (not the metal) coil bindings, which are safest for children and come in bright colors. Maybe a local printer will give you a price break! Latest Idea...There are some folks who might be willing to write stories, but don't want to make books. We have Broadway actors and voiceover artists who are willing to record stories that we can distribute on CDs and through a Podcast on iTunes. John Milford of Jonny Milford Productions in Stockton, CA has volunteered to handle the recording of stories in his studio for us. If we can find people/companies who would be willing to donate iPod Shuffles, we could reach more childlren in the Astrodome and other shelters right away! Contact me for details. Although these books may give you ideas, remember that the children need "regular" cheerful books also! Little children generally like books about animals best...especially animals that talk!
